BYU Football: Cougs get 21st commitment
The Salt Lake Tribune
Cody Hoffman, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver from Del Norte High in Crescent City, Calif., has orally committed to play football for BYU. Hoffman said Thursday that he will sign with BYU on Feb. 4.
Hoffman was a three-time all-conference selection, but his only other scholarship offer came from Sacramento State.
He went on a recruiting visit to BYU last weekend, along with Layton High’s Thomas Bryson, who committed to the Cougars on Saturday.
Hoffman has played almost every position on defense for his high school team, along with receiver.
BYU discovered Hoffman when one of his teachers, Terry Vance, who was familiar with BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall from their days at Oregon State, alerted the Cougar staff to the all-around athlete.

Like this is news? Come on 65K sold out seats in a stadium compared to 6K seats in an erector set environment.
Well, if you gave it some thought, I think a case could be made for why someone would choose Sac State over BYU, especially if those two schools are your only options. If you know anything about the college culture in Provo and the stringent lifestyle rules due to its affiliation with LDS, it would be reasonable to decline playing for BYU.
Very good point Mr. Rat. Jim McMahon is very eager to tell anyone that will listen how stringent it is at BYU, but also how two faced it is. He asserts that when no one is looking there is a lot of cigarette smokin’, coffee drinkin’ and beer bongin’ going on, yet they won’t put him in their HOF because of his party animal reputation. Become a Hornet and get buzzed!
I am aware of the Provo culture. If you play football and you are good at it, wouldn’t you want to play in front of 65K fans?
Why didn’t anyone else offer?
No. Because maybe some athletes choose not to play in front of 65k homogeneous fans, living by their Honor Code, and where many students are already married and starting families. I don’t begrudge BYU, or the students who choose that lifestyle. My point is simply that it can deter some from committing to play there.
No offense but Hoffman wanted to play D-1 not D-1AA he was pretty much set on that throughout his college pursuit. He made un-official visits to both Boise State and Oregon State but neither of them offered. Cody is a supreme talent and will do well in BYU. He is big and has good hands. Add that to some decent speed and you have a great receiver. I think more teams didn’t offer him scholarships was because of how secluded Del Norte High School is. They did play some good teams every year in the playoffs but their league is a little weak. Good Luck Cody. Sorry Hornet fans… ;-(
